Handling excellent and decision-making top quality. Made four smart saves and distributed the ball well. Could do nothing about Reading’s goals 7

Joel Bagan

A Scottish junior international and attacking left-back. A teenager with genuine potential, focused on defending solidly. Calm, composed and has the pace to get up and back. He benefitted from having Sol Bamba alongside him at centre-half. Joined the Bluebirds from Southampton, a regular in the under-23 team and made his first team debut. Cardiff clearly trust Began because his partner on the left was Josh Murphy, an attack-minded winger. Bagan made way for Bennett after 82 minutes and was applauded off the pitch 7

The big man is 6ft 6ins tall – a major physical presence, but Yakou Meite outsmarted Flint when he scored Reading’s third goal. That was a pity because Flint produced a solid performance overall 6

Sol Bamba

A valuable mentor and partner for young Joel Bagan at left-back. Steadily regaining his form, this was Sol’s best display since returning from injury – and that was great to see. Those seemingly telescopic legs made some terrific tackles 7

Jazz Richards

Genuine quality at right-back. Posed a threat to Reading when he moved forward, but was caught out when Reading scored their first – and the third 6

Marlon Pack (capt)

Intelligent, quick-thinking midfield player. A leader and hugely competitive. Patrolled midfield with an assured confidence – and was the only Cardiff player to score in the penalty shootout 8

Will Vaulks

Adds a touch of steel and bite in the tackle through midfield. Played his part in the build-up to Murphy’s goal and was involved when Glatzel scored. He produced two outstanding passes – one short, the other a 30-yard ball caressed to Glatzel. A vocal and physical presence in midfield who is showing real signs that he is going to be a force for the Bluebirds. That long throw is a threat 8

Josh Murphy – Man of the Match

His best performance in a Bluebirds shirt so far. Started well, cutting inside and seeing plenty of possession. Murphy looked dangerous going forward – scored after 19 minutes with a left-foot strike from the edge of the penalty area into the bottom corner and added another in extra time 8

Danny Ward

Linked with Glatzel in attack – and they were both helped by Cardiff encouraging the full-backs to attack. Almost scored a third Cardiff goal, but denied by an outstanding tackle by former Bluebirds defender Chris Gunter. Ward and Glatzel took turns in dropping deeper to help out City’s midfield. Ward’s workmate and energy are top notch. Made way for Paterson with 13 minutes left 7

Gavin Whyte

Linked with Vaulks for Cardiff’s second goal, accepting a pass and giving the ball back to Vaulks, who sent Glatzel in on goal. Loves to go forward, but defended solidly with a couple of big tackles. The partnership with Richards down the right looked sloppy at times, allowing Reading space down that side. Made way for Tom Sang in extra time 7

Robert Glatzel

At last the German striker was given genuine support – and he struck with an excellent second half goal scored with a cool composure. City switched to 4-4-2 and Glatzel linked with Danny Ward in attack. Worked hard in a big team effort 8
